Sooooo, apparently I totally suck at picking the NHL playoffs. After a couple of rounds, I fail completely in the West. Like, 100% wrong, even in the first round. Then, even 100% wrong brackets for the second round! So, I guess, in a way, I'm 100% right... if I'm picking losing teams. Or something, right? Like, there has to be SOME prize for being completely perfectly wrong, right? Back East, I did a little better. I got the Lightning all the way through to the Conference final, and 3 out of 4 in the first round. So, there's that, I guess, which probably means I'm not actually 100% wrong, so... after looking the the West, I'm... kinna a little disappointed?
Oh well, anyway. My picks for the Conference Finals: East: Lightning vs. Penguins Do I have to pick on this one? The Lightning were here last year, so they know what they need to do, and they've been quietly taking care of business the whole playoffs long. They're well rested, since they've only played 10 games so far, but they've still been having injury issues all year. And, I dunno, they feel like such a bland team that I just can't buy into the Lightning craze. Which means I'm stuck with the Penguins. Okay, so they're not the completely whiny Penguins they used to be. They're only the slightly whiny Penguins. And they're damn good. They beat Ovechkin and the Caps in 6, with Crosby not scoring any goals. They're also pretty well rested, having played only one game more than the Lightning. Do I really have to pick? I don't want to, but I gotta say, Pittsburgh has changed their look and they probably have what it takes to get by Tampa Bay. As much as it pains me, I gotta take Pittsburgh in 6. West: Sharks vs. Blues Two completely new players to this stage of the playoffs out West this year. Okay, so they're not completely new. I mean, the Blues got this far in 2001, so, as my French teacher used to say, "relatively recently." And the Sharks keep getting here... and never beyond. So, you have a couple hungry teams chasing a dream that neither has reached. The Blues are a tempting choice. They play a rough, hard hitting game, and they were ultimately able to shut down the high-powered offenses of the Blackhawks and Stars. They're fairly healthy, and have shown a great deal of resiliency. They've also faced far more adversity than the Sharks have in the playoffs, going through the defending Stanley Cup Champions and the number 1 team in the west, taking both to 7 games. Still, there's something to be said about the Sharks' cool, collected nature this playoff. They don't just have resiliency. They have Cade's fucking jello. Anything negative happens to them and they just... shrug it off. This is a team that has been defined by its failures for a really long time and they look ready to shut critics up. No, actually, they look like a team that doesn't care about critics. They're playing some amazing hockey right now. The real question is can their offense get through the Blues' lines of defense? This one's a close one, and I almost feel like flipping a coin might give me better odds. I feel like San Jose is having fun out there and working in a perfect swarming formation. It doesn't matter than Nashville forgot to fly out to California for the game; the Sharks put on a clinic all game long. I think their failures are the lessons that are driving them right now. They're a team with something to prove and not much time left to prove it in. I'm going to go with San Jose in 7.
