“...Back away from it. Slowly. Don’t startle it.” The rattle seemed to cut through the air as Enoch reached out to put a hand on his brother’s shoulder, ready to pull him back. “No, wait…” Ezriel whispered. His four year old eyes were wide with fascination. The way the snake coiled and watched them seemed to be drawing him in, the rattle somehow mesmerizing him. “It’s beautiful…” “Dad’s going to kill me if something happens to you,” Enoch furrowed his brows and looked around fretfully. When he turned back, his heart dropped to see Ezra extending his hand toward the snake. Without thinking, he slashed out to pull his brother back. Fast as lightning, the snake lurched forward, sinking his teeth into Enoch’s arm. Ezra fell back into the dirt. His breathing increased as he suddenly saw the difference in the snake. The boy pulled himself back as the snake attacked again. He fumbled in the small pouch around his waist to pull out a Swiss Army Knife. He pulled out the knife and gulped. Something caught in his throat, but as the snake sank his fangs into Enoch’s arm again, there was no other choice. The boy pulled his arm back and threw the knife. Slicing through the snake’s neck and pinning him to the dirt. Click banner for full story
Ezra had not said a word since the end of the contest, instead looking surly. It wasn’t enough that he had lost, but now he was to be summoned to see Elon bathed in glory. It didn’t matter that his older brother was supposed to win. It didn’t matter that the fact that he got second at age nine in a tournament he wasn’t even supposed to enter for another year was impressive enough. All he knew, all he could feel was the bitter sting of disappointment, all the moreso that the loss came at the hands of the only person he trusted, what little trust he gave at all. When the secretary or whoever left the room, he only relaxed in his formal posture enough to avoid passing out, ignoring the comfortable cushions, the sweets, and, most importantly, Elon. “What? ...no thank yous? No, good job? You know, I could of let you just bleed out there.’’ Elon shot back when the helper left, he made his way over to the sweets and started to take a couple of the cup cakes. Sugar was a luxury, they never had it here. So having something like this was a treat! “It’s what everyone else would have done,” Ezra finally said, realizing almost immediately that he couldn’t have ignored the outburst. “I could’ve let that other guy clobber you too, you know,” he added, feeling his bitterness only grow as he looked over toward Elon. “You won. Good job, buddy,” he said, his tone oozing with sarcasm. “Now I’ve gotta sit here and watch him give you all the glory while I’m just another defect that was supposed to die out there.” The anger again masked the fear and as he glared toward Elon, his eyes betrayed him, showing how terrified he really was, even as his hands clinched into tight fists. “...listen, your still young. You have alot to prove already. Both of us do.” Elon muttered and heard the door chamber opened, the sound caused his heart to drop as he stood up straight to see his father coming with with a prideful smirk on his face. “ Father” He saluted by putting a fist to his heart.
